Insurgents have shot dead at least 8 well-respected Somali clan elders and seriously injured 11 others in Gedo region of Somalia.

Unidentified gunmen sprayed the car carrying the clan elders with bullets, leaving 8 killed and 11 others gravely wounded, a Press TV correspondent reported Tuesday.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the assault as the reason of attack remains unknown.

Many have vehemently denounced the action and described it as atrocious.

The clan elders’ deaths dealt a major blow to efforts bent on bringing peace between two belligerent clans in the area, an elder commented.

The Horn of Africa state has been in complete shambles since President Siad Barre was removed from power in 1991. Given that, the country has not witnessed an effective central government.
