Five Ugandan soldiers, serving the African Union Mission to Somalia, have been killed after their vehicle hit a landmine in southern Mogadishu.

The blast took place in a United Nations Development Program (UNDP) compound south of the Somali capital, said the Press TV correspondent there.

Al-Shabaab fighters, affiliated to the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC), have claimed responsibility for the blast.

Unconfirmed reports claim the AMISOM spokesman was among the dead and that five other Ugandans were killed in the explosion well. The incident was followed by intense fighting between Somali fighters and Ugandan soldiers in the area.

1,600 Ugandan troops, enlisted with the AMISOM, operate in Mogadishu.
