At least 13 people were wounded Sunday night after an explosion in Somalia’s northern region of Puntland, Radio Garowe reports.

Seven police officers were wounded in the initial explosion, which security sources said originated from a hand grenade thrown at a police checkpoint.

Police gunfire in the aftermath wounded six civilians, all of whom are being treated at local hospitals in Bossaso, Puntland’s commercial port city.

One police officer is reportedly in critical condition, although the wounded civilians sustained smaller injuries, according to medical sources.

Puntland police commanders said there is an ongoing investigation but admitted that there were no suspects.

Some unconfirmed reports suggested that the bomb belonged to the police officers and exploded accidentally.

Puntland is a relatively stable part of Somalia and has a functioning regional government.

The leader of Hizbul Islam Islamist group, Sheik Omar Iman Abu Bakar said Sunday that Somalia’s government could not anything about the situation of the country and was not different from the previous government led by former president Abdulahi Yusuf.

He said AMISOM troops did not come to Somalia for peace keeping but to prevent the Islamists and their influence in the country.

« I want to remind the Somali people that the Burundian and Ugandan troops were trained by American forces and were sent to Somalia to fight with the (Mujahidin) holy war fighters and they do not want peace to prevail in Somalia,” said Sheik Omar Iman.

The leader indicated that it was unfortunate for the Somali people to support the government which he described as an “apostate” government.

The statement of the Islamist leader comes as there are peace efforts by Islamic clerics and clan elders to stop the fighting which has been ongoing in Somalia for the last 18 years
