KAMPALA:

MURDER OF SWEDISH JOURNALIST IN SOMALIA CONDEMNED

The East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders’ Network (EHAHRD-Net) has
learnt with a lot of sadness about the unfortunate murder of a Swedish
Photojournalist in the Somali Capital Mogadishu.

Network members in the
capital say that a pistol wielding gunman shot Martin Adler from behind
during a demonstration by Somalis in support of the deal reached by the
interim government and the Islamic Courts Union in Khartoum recently.

The deceased was at the time of his death, a freelance journalist with the
Swedish daily newspaper, Aftonblandet.

His death comes in the wake of
continued harassment of the media in the conflict-ravaged Horn of Africa
country. Just recently, the Network noted with concern the closure of Radio
Shabelle and the harassment of its reporters, a move that sent scare waves
to the few media organizations operating within the country.

« The death of Martin Adler has robbed us of a committed human rights
defender who offered his life for the rights of others. We highly condemn
such acts of lawlessness that have engulfed the country and call upon all
the warring sides to embrace peaceful means of ending the conflict in
Somalia, » says Hassan Shire Sheikh, Chairperson of EHAHRD-Net.

The Network extends sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased and
calls upon the international community to join hands and see to it that the
perpetrators of this brutal murder are brought to justice.
